General Information P.D.S.C. has long had the reputation of being a friendly and informal club that welcomes people of all ages who are interested in sailing, whether this takes the form of racing, cruising or just sailing for fun. It is a club that particularly welcomes families. The present membership is eager to keep up this reputation and new members are soon made to feel at home. The club has a thriving youth section and makes strenuous efforts to encourage young people as well as adults new to the sport. Clubhouse We own a new purpose built Clubhouse with a dinghy park and slipway with changing rooms, showers and a galley (serving hot food & drinks on race days). There is an excellent Pub on the adjacent seafront front frequented by many of the members. Racing Racing takes place from late March to late December on Saturday afternoons, and on Wednesday evenings from late April to early September and also Friday evenings in June and July. Classes of Boat Many members are keen racers and we organise Handicap racing (fast, medium and slow) for dinghies and keelboats with open meetings held during the season. Popular classes at the club are Hornets, RS400s, Lasers, Solo, GP14s, Enterprises and Optimists. Moorings There are deepwater moorings controlled by the Caernarfon Harbour Trust adjacent to the club. Winter Storage Subject to availability of space members can store boats in the dinghy park with an upper limit of 7 meters for keelboats with the proviso that they can be moved as required and that they will be launched by May. New Members and Visitors Newcomers are permitted to crew or helm as guests of the club for up to 3 races before they are expected to join. Introduction to Sailing The club holds Youth Training sessions for beginners, improvers and those starting to race. The club owns 10 Optimist Dinghies and certified courses are held at the club on Saturday mornings in the season. Adult Training takes place on Friday evenings. Social Events Besides the Annual Dinner and Prize Giving there are Fitting Out and Laying Up suppers, barbecues and other social events held at the club. Directions The club is just off the main road (A4087) in the village of Y Felinheli (formerly Port Dinorwic) which is halfway between Bangor and Caernarfon. By sea the club is on the Menai Straits about 2 miles South West of the Britannia Road/Rail Bridge and 5 miles North East of the Caernarfon Bar entrance to the Straits. The Straits are strongly tidal and near the club the tide can run up to 3.5 knots at springs with a range of 7 metres. It is possible to launch and recover dinghies at all states of the tide. |
